INGREDIENT LOVE: KAKADU PLUM

Meet our newest obsession - the kakadu plum.

While the kakadu plum’s meteoric rise to fame may seem like an outright, overnight sensation, this superfood has been used for thousands of years (53,000 to be exact), due to its many nutritious and medicinal properties.

But don’t be fooled by its potentially misleading name. The green-colored, olive-sized fruit packs a serious Vitamin C punch.

What Is The Kakadu Plum?

Kakadu plums are a native fruit grown in the remote bush of Northern Australia. Commonly referred to as the billygoat plum, bush plum, or salty plum, this flowering fruit is a storehouse of vitamins, antioxidants, and other great nutrients.

In traditional medicine, Kakadu plums were used to treat colds, the flu, and everyday ailments, providing antiseptic and soothing effects for the body. It is these properties that make the Kakadu plums rich in antioxidants which work to give us brighter, healthier, and younger-looking skin.

What Are The Skin Benefits of Kakadu Plums?

Scientists and doctors believe the kakadu plum to be the most concentrated source of Vitamin C known to earth. According to board-certified dermatologist and DERMAdoctor founder, Dr. Audrey Kunin, the kakadu plum contains over 50 TIMES the Vitamin C of Florida oranges, on average, offering all of the benefits of Vitamin C products, and then some. Nutritionist, Michele Chevalley Hedge, adds that “this Vitamin C greatly assists the process of collagen synthesis, which, in turn, protects our skin from premature aging.”

Some Other Key benefits worth noting include:

  • Brighter complexion
  • Nourished and invigorated skin
  • Reduced hyperpigmentation, redness, swelling and bacterially-induced acne
  • Protection from harsh environmental aggressors, such as pollution
  • Firming and plumping of the skin
  • Reduction in the appearance of wrinkles

Because of the high levels of antioxidants and presence of many natural acids, kakadu plum is great for nearly all skin types - especially blemish-prone skin - helping to detox the skin of unwanted toxins we know you can’t wait to flush away.

Is Kakadu Plum Safe?

Kakadu plum extract can be applied directly to the skin, but due to the sheer power behind this olive-sized fruit, there are factors to consider.

For those with sensitive skin, it is recommended to test a small patch before applying kakadu-based products all over your gorgeous face.

To help reduce stinging or irritation, Dr. Kunin suggests that those with extremely dry or sensitive skin layer kakadu plum products with a hyaluronic acid serum for optimal results.

Lastly, kakadu plum is a socially responsible, sustainable crop that’s good for the environment and good for you. Pretty sweet, huh?

Using Kakadu Plum In Your Skincare Routine

Kakadu plum can be found in a variety of oil-based creams, serums, oils, tonics and lotions and is intended (and safe) to be applied topically.

Kakadu-containing products are best used day and night, year-round, following face cleanser for ultimate therapeutic skin benefits.

For those with sensitive skin, it is recommended to start by using once a day before considering increasing daily usage to twice per day.

Why We Care, And Think You Might, Too

We think the kakadu plum is a noteworthy ingredient due to its Vitamin C potency alone, but the added benefit of antioxidants and collagen stimulation offer other pretty amazing skin benefits!
