We had the wonderful opportunity to talk to up-and-coming skincare and beauty content creator Xavier, otherwise known as the BoyInBlush! Between posting ethereal makeup looks, and being a skin care fanatic, Xavier is always actively working to look out for his community!
Tell us a little bit about how you got started with creating skincare and beauty content?
I’ve always been a creative and visual person growing up, and really got into photographing and creating visuals while in high school. Product photography and branding was my favorite so I used to just sit in my room and take photos of the products I had and really liked. That turned into more of a hobby once I started college and had the opportunity to buy products from brands I really connected with outside of the drugstore (I started to find ways to treat my cystic acne at the time, and fell in love with Korean Skincare and next level product formulations).
How did you get started with your skin care routine?
In college I really struggled with inflammatory cystic acne and felt extremely overwhelmed after getting treatments with an esthetician, trying medical grade treatments and not seeing results. I started to research and educate myself on everything I could to help my skin. From my research, I learned that some of the most advanced formulas are created in South Korea, and that pushed me to try out a lot of Korean Skincare products. After figuring out what worked for me, I really started seeing the most dramatic results and was able to really change my skin. From there I decided to work in the skincare industry to help others solve their skin concerns through effective and gentle skin care philosophies while I worked for brands like Lush Cosmetics and Skin Laundry.
What is your skin care philosophy?
My skin care philosophy is giving your skin what it needs when it needs it. My routine changes often for that reason, but I always stick to medicinal and natural ingredients that are proven to be calming, gentle, and effective for your skin. I love well thought out product formulations that use that best of science and natural skin healing ingredients :) I have a list of ingredients I avoid at all costs, and that has really helped keep my skin happy and in its best shape.
Tell us a little bit about your daily self-care routine?
For me self care always stays consistent and is taken very seriously. It’s not just related to skincare, it can be boosting mental clarity, treating your body with nutrients it craves, the list goes on and on! On a good day, I use my favorite skincare and body care products. I make myself a matcha oat milk latte with cinnamon in the morning. I spend time indulging in things I love like creating makeup looks, Netflix binging, organizing and cleaning spaces. Very much Virgo things! I try not to take things too seriously and appreciate the little things.
Is there anything unique in your routine that is tailored towards your lifestyle?
Without a doubt! I think the most unique thing for me is that I really spend time pulling inspiration from the things I love when I decide to create a makeup look. That means I spend HOURS listening to music (specially artists like SOPHIE, Charli XCX, Rina Sawayama, Hannah Diamond, BTS, CRUSH) isolating myself in my room, and ultimately only photographing makeup looks after midnight. I feel the most creative and myself in the nighttime, I am absolutely a night owl.
What is the most important skin care advice you can give to your community?
Be gentle with your skin. It’s your skin and you have to see it everyday, so don’t be hard on yourself. Try to use products that are known to be hydrating, calming, and protective for your skin. You can never know too much about your skin, so seek professional help when you feel lost.
What are some of your must-have skincare products?
Ah do I have to tell my secrets!?!
I really love the Hanskin Hyaluron Skin Essence. I’ve used it for years and it’s always a flood of hydration for my skin. I’m also a huge fan of Purito Centella Unscented Sunscreen, it’s super compatible with my skin and is one of my favorite sunscreens due to inclusion of Centella and gentle chemical UV filters. I’ve been a long time user of gua sha and massage technique which really helps with inflammation in my face, I always tell people to give it a try! Lastly I have to give EVENPRIME a shout out and talk about how much I love the Blemish Patches. They stay on all day/night and won’t budge while you sleep. They also really bring down the inflammation from breakouts while absorbing all the nasties. Plus they are super cute to wear and take selfies with!
If you were on the deserted island and could only bring 3 things...what would those be and why?
I feel like I could get crafty and figure out ways to make skincare so I’ll only mention one beauty product.
- Hydrating Cleanser. If I have clean skin I have a good base, and I’ll get crafty with the rest of my routine.
- A big journal. I’d want to document as much as I could and have somewhere to write my thoughts.
- Music player of some sort. I NEED music on a daily basis so I couldn’t go without it.
Where do you get your inspiration behind all your instagram makeup looks?
I find inspiration in music, other artists, and all the fun stuff like video games/pop culture/childhood. I really like and appreciate character design and a lot of my inspiration comes from my favorite characters. I also find inspiration in moments and memories. I connect to the past a lot in my art and creative expression.
As you know, EVENPRIME is inspired by 90s anime and gaming. What’s your favorite 90s anime or game? Favorite Character?
Yes of course, one of my favorite things about EVENPRIME! I have 2 favorite 90s video games, The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, and Super Smash Bro’s (both N64 games, that is what I predominantly played growing up!) I was young in the 90s so my favorite anime at the time was Pokémon, but as an adult I’ve enjoyed watching Ghost In The Shell and Cowboy Bepop.
Favorite Character is Major Motoko Kusanagi because she’s bada** and has a complex background (although her traits and history vary from series to series).
